The Great Hafner is 3076  m above sea level. A. high, slightly glaciated mountain in the Ankogel group on the border between Carinthia and Salzburg . It is the highest elevation of the Lungau and the Hafner group between Katschtal (uppermost Liesertal ), Maltatal and Murtal , that subgroup of the Ankogel group in which the easternmost three thousand meter peaks of the Alps are located. The northern flank of the Großer Hafner has been largely part of the Hohe Tauern National Park since 1991 .

description

The main summit, with its pre-summit "Kleiner Hafner" or "Lanischhafner" ( 3018  m ) as well as the adjoining Malteiner Sonnblick ( 3030  m ), Kleinem and Mittlerer Sonnblick ( 3000  m ) to the east , forms a steep watershed between the nearby valleys of the upper Lieser and the deeply cut Malta. The Hafner itself is located on the border between Carinthia and Salzburg , where the catchment areas of the two tributaries of the Drava (Lieser, Malta) and the Mur meet. Only 3 km to the northwest, on the northern flank of the Kölnbreinspitze ( 2934  m ), there is also that of the Salzach , which only crosses the Alps in the upper reaches to the east, but then to the north.

Because of this peculiarity, the main Alpine ridge runs steeply here, but at a relatively uniform height of around 3000  m , and its transitions are only slightly lower: for example in the Wastlkar-Scharte ( 2720  m ), where a long-distance hiking trail crosses the Hohe Tauern, or in the Karschneideck ( 2972  m ). The region is an interesting study object of landform science and, because of its water-rich cirques and many high mountain lakes, also of hydrology and energy management . The glaciers, however, are relatively small, in contrast to the nearby Ankogel and Hochalmspitze ( 3360  m ): the ice of Wastelkar- , Lanisch - and Rotgülden-Kees measuring barely 0.5 square kilometers, but are surrounded by vast Karen. At her foot in the east u. a. the flat Lanischseen , in the north the two magical Rotgüldenseen .

The Hafner Group is surrounded by the following mountain ranges:

  • in the southwest the Ankogel group (highest summit, Hochalmspitze 3360  m , whose huge glacier almost "reflects over" the sunlight in the afternoon)
  • in the south the Kreuzeck - Reisseck group ( 2965  m ) of Upper Carinthia
  • to the east - a little further away - the gentle Gurktal Alps
  • and in the north-east the Radstädter Tauern , beneath whose densely packed peaks (but 1,300 m lower) the northern of the two Tauern tunnels of the motorway runs.

Climbs

The Große Hafner is usually climbed from the south (Maltatal, Kölnbreinsperre ), from where after a few hours you reach the Kattowitzer Hut ( 2319  m ), which is located on the southern slope of its main ridge, which appears to be shield-like here. After another 200 meters of altitude, the path divides in the Ochsenkar to the Hafner or east to the Lanisch-Scharte and the Lanischseen of the same name .

The ascent from the north (via Rotgüldenseehütte ) is reserved for climbers and the steep slope bears the meaningful name "Wildes Wagendrischl-Kar". The east-west ridge is extremely jagged in places with slopes of more than 60 °. From the east ( Katschberg Pass and Tauernautobahn near Rennweg), following the upper reaches of the Lieser, there is a 15 km long but scenic hike through the alpine pastures of the Pöllatal , which leads past the Lieserfall and the two Lanisch lakes. For the not easy climb from the Seekar to the Lanischkees, however, you will be rewarded for a view of the main summit close to the ridge, which looks like a sharp ax from the narrow side - to the side of the south wall.

geology

The Hafner and its neighboring peaks consist largely of slate and gneiss-like rocks, which are combined to form the Hafner group. The mountain range is around 20 kilometers long and represents the eastern edge of the so-called Tauern Window, where rocks from tectonically deeper units come to light.
