List of Slovenian field names in Carinthia

Slovenian place names (or Mikrotoponyme) and farm names in Carinthia reflect the centuries-long history of settlement and subject to the processes of inculturation . In the succession of Celtic, Roman, Ostrogothic, Slovene, German-speaking settlement waves, the names were often only slightly adapted and adapted to the sound of the prevailing language. In those areas that have recently undergone a linguistic change from a historical perspective and were previously part of the closed Slovene settlement area, the Celtic-Latin names were inculturated and Sloveneized as loan words . The same applies to the names of noble residences in the Slovenian environment. Often there are so-called Calque translations, i.e. simple phonetic adaptations (Goriče - Goritschach, Gorinčiče - Gorintschach, Čahorče - Tschachoritsch, Slovenje - Slovenjach, Vellacher Kotschna - Belska Kočna), with others it seems that historically there was no time to do them translate or transfer so that the same name has been preserved and is now used in the younger German name: (Dolina / Dolina) <( Slovene valley) Place near Poggersdorf / Pokrče; Koschuta / Košuta (the hind); Raba / Raba (tributary of the Gurk / Krka near Niederdorf / Delnja vas). Other names were lost or newly created.

As in many places in Europe, there are different names for many places in different languages ​​that are used at the same time. This often expresses traditional historical, social, political, economic and linguistic relationships without necessarily having an ethnic connotation.

In 2010 the vocabulary of the Slovenian field and farm names in Carinthia was declared an intangible cultural heritage , as declared by UNESCO, and included in the list of Austria (national cultural property) . Local cultural associations and committed citizens produce maps of the Slovene field names in cooperation with the Ethnographic Institute Urban Jarnik in Klagenfurt / Celovec. Edited so far: field names from Köttmannsdorf / Kotmara vas, Zell / Sele , Sankt Margareten im Rosental / Šmarjeta v Rožu and Schiefling am See / Škofiče and, most recently, based on preliminary work by Wilhelm Wadl in the Magdalensberg book, the field names of the old community of St. Thomas am Zeiselberg and the wider area of ​​the Klagenfurt field by Bojan-Ilija Schnabl.
