The Trögerner Klamm ( Slovenian Korške peči or Korška sotesta ) is a narrow, approximately three kilometer long gorge ( gorge ) 2.5 km south-west of Eisenkappel-Vellach in Carinthia . The gorge can be reached via Eisenkappel or Ferlach / Zell Pfarre or Freibach. The under conservation standing gorge with their bizarre limestone is a romantic gorge landscape and is (the "Trögernbach" Slovenian brook Korski or Korška voda ) flowed through.

overview

The Trögerner Klamm is a gorge-like incision in the foothills of the Koschuta , which is fully accessible by a road that was laid out between 1923 and 1925. The gorge owes its scenic charm to the interplay between the beech and gray alder forest typical of the altitude (approx. 700 m), which is largely interrupted by the barren, humus-free limestone cliffs down to the stream. The asphalt road, which is rarely used and which is also the hiking trail, runs without any major inclines and is therefore ideal for hiking with a stroller or for people who are dependent on a wheelchair. At the end of the gorge there is a water adventure world and a playground for children. The geological and botanical peculiarities are explained in detail by several display boards.

Access is via Eisenkappel and through the "Ebriacher Klamm". At the mountain end of the gorge , high up above the valley to the left, is the small hamlet of Trögern (Slovene Korte ) , which gives the gorge its name , with an idyllic mountain church and a small cemetery. The church is a branch church of the parish Ebriach and is only open during church services. The former Gasthof Pristounik next to the church, a popular summer retreat for some families from Vienna in the interwar period, has not been in operation for several years. Currently the only restaurant in the gorge, apart from the one directly in front of the entrance to the gorge, is the "Gasthof Franzl" (Slovenian "Gostilna Francl") run by Franz Smrtnik and his family at the end of the approx. 3 km long hiking trail in the gorge . The Trögerner Klamm is part of the Eisenwurzenweg , a hiking trail from Rottal in the Waldviertel to the Seebergsattel .

In the immediate vicinity of the gorge in the Potokgraben (side part of the Trögerner gorge) is the 114 hectare Potok natural forest reserve , which has existed since 1977 and whose specialty is the population of black pines and manna ash (flower ash ).

As a mountain stream, the Trögernbach, which flows into the Ebriach stream, is an ideal area for fly fishermen . Together with Ebriachbach, Vellach and Kleiner Drau, the Trögerner Klamm is one of the largest contiguous fly fishing areas in Austria. The Trögernerbach with a width between 3 m and 6 m, partly with very deep pools, is home to brown and rainbow trout .

The risk of forest fires increases due to the increasingly drier summers. One of the largest forest fires in Carinthia, affecting an area of 30 hectares, occurred in the Trögerner Klamm in 1998. Three fire-fighting aircraft and six helicopters were used to extinguish the fire caused by lightning .

Geological features

The striking rock breaks allow a “walk through the former seabed”. The eastern Karawanken are divided in two by the west-east running Periadriatic Seam. This most important fault zone in the Alps separates the Eastern Alps from the Southern Alps. Hochobir and Petzen therefore still belong to the Eastern Alps, the part south of the Ebriachbach, with Koschuta, Seebergsattel , Uschova and Trögerner Klamm, already belongs to the Southern Alps .

The Trögerner Gorge is predominantly made of Schlern dolomite (named after a mountain in the Dolomites ). This was formed around 250-210 million years ago from the remains of calcareous organisms that were deposited in the calm water of a lagoon. This resulted in the stratification that can still be seen today. When the Alps were later unfolded, the rocks came to their current position on the mainland.

Over the course of millions of years, the Trögerner Bach has cut about 600 m deep into the bedrock, which means that the bank and stratification structure can be observed very well.

On the opposite slope of the stream you can see the white Schlern dolomite on the right, next to it black limestone and then red Val Gardena sandstone. The layers, which are only a few meters thick and almost vertical, were originally deposited on top of each other and were many times thicker than can be seen here.

Young old gravel

Due to erosion, the stream is constantly fed with rock, which is ground into gravel by being transported in the water. The reddish / brown / white speckled rock of the Tarvisian breccia (named after Tarvisio in the Carnic Alps ) is particularly striking . This Tarvisio breccia itself is a fossil gravel, which was deposited around 250 million years ago, before the formation of the Schlern Dolomites .

Silberbründl

The Silberbründl is located just below the parking lot at the beginning of the gorge. It is a low mineralized, cold Akratopege (spring outlet) and has its catchment area in Paleozoic shale above the Trögerner Klamm car park. The spring has a relatively low mineralization and can be assigned to the calcium-magnesium hydrogen carbonate water type.

Habitat water

The mountain stream is an extreme habitat in constant change. The fluctuating water flow with episodic flooding of the banks leads to a constant change in the stream bed. Nevertheless, or precisely because of this, a rich world of insects and arachnids can be found in the Trögerner Bach, on its banks and on the gravel banks. Species of European importance live in the Trögerner Klamm. No other river in Carinthia is known to have so many rump-winged beetles as from the banks of the Koschuta- and Trögern brooks. In addition, numerous extremely rare and endangered ground beetles and spiders live here .

The peculiar floristic character of the Trögener Gorge is due to the combination of alpine and subalpine plants with species of the Illyrian karst forest in a relatively narrow area. In a side ditch you can find the poisonous cockfoot, which is not found anywhere else in Austria. The dolomite stripe fern is also very rare.

Spring maiden, shrew and toad

The best living conditions for the striped spring damsel , an endangered species of dragonfly, prevail at the spring outlets and seepage corridors of the side streams . The water-bearing side ditches and floodpumps of the Koschuta- and Trögerner Bach are spawning waters and development sites for amphibians such as fire salamanders and yellow-bellied toad . Swamp and water shrews and the endangered Alpine shrew live in the shady and damp brook gorges . With a little luck, the attentive observer can spot the gray wagtail , whose breeding population in the Trögerner Klamm area is estimated to be around 5 pairs.

  • The stone of life. In the forests of Trögern, the Counts of Hollenburg once organized a great hunt every autumn. Once one of the gentlemen fell into a deep pit in the dense forest, could no longer free himself and was not found by his hunting colleagues either. Desperate, he crawled into a crevice and came into a grotto in which many snakes wound around a stone that they licked from time to time. The snake queen told him to do the same, and so he could survive the winter without food. When he left the cave with the snakes in spring, he had to promise the snake queen not to tell anyone. Back at home in the castle, the count kept quiet at first, but in the intoxication he disclosed his secret. When he and his companions had almost reached the point where he had come into the mountain in the search for the stone of life in the forest, he fell from his horse as punishment for the betrayal and was dead on the spot.
  • The snake crown. Once upon a time there was a poor cow-girl who kept giving a Kronschlage a little milk for a lifetime. When the maid had grown old and sick, she told the snake about her worries about her future, whereupon she gave the poor woman her little crown. She did not recognize the value of her treasure, gave it to her master to keep and soon passed away. The farmer, however, knew of the magical power of a serpent's crown and kept it well. Year after year he sold more grain. One day, however, he forgot the source of his wealth. The crown fell into a sack of grain, was ground in the mill and lost its magical power. Nevertheless, the farmer lived on in high spirits, lost his farm and died in miserable circumstances.
