Georg Graber (born April 15, 1882 in Pörtschach am Wörther See , † August 27, 1957 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) was an Austrian teacher , classical philologist , storyteller and folklorist .

Life

Georg Graber studied German and classical philology at the universities of Graz , Vienna and Leipzig . In 1905 he received his doctorate with the dissertation “The jumpy in German folk song. - A contribution to the textual criticism and explanation of the folk song. ” To the doctor of philosophy .

Professional activity

School service from 1905

In the same year he returned to Carinthia and began teaching, initially at the grammar schools in Klagenfurt and Villach and from 1909 at the renowned teacher training institute in Klagenfurt.

After the director of this educational establishment, Karl Schranzer, died unexpectedly on July 18, 1919, Graber was temporarily entrusted with the management of the school and was also appointed director of the institute on May 9, 1921. Georg Graber worked in this position until 1926, when he accepted his appointment as state school inspector for compulsory schools in Carinthia. For his successful work in the school service, Graber was awarded the title of Councilor by Federal President Wilhelm Miklas in 1932 .

During the time of National Socialism

From 1940 to 1945 headed Grabner, the department "Culture and Community Care" in the provincial team and Reichsstatthalterei Carinthia and worked from 1942 as head of the Center for Folklore on, as part of the NS - Ahnenerbe in Klagenfurt newly founded Institute for Carinthian State Research at the University of Graz.

Even during his retirement, he continued to devote himself intensively to researching the legends and fairy tales of his Carinthian homeland. He also managed to publish some of his scientific work during this time. Georg Graber died in 1957 at the age of 75. Part of his academic legacy is in the folklore department in the State Museum for Carinthia in the state capital Klagenfurt.
