The Karawanken Geopark is located in the Karawanken mountain range in Austria and Slovenia and covers an area of 1067 km². The cross-border Geopark offers numerous geological and cultural interest and was 2013 in the Global Geoparks Network of UNESCO added.

Fourteen communities on both sides of the border are involved, namely Bad Eisenkappel , Bleiburg , Črna na Koroškem , Dravograd , Feistritz ob Bleiburg , Gallizien , Globasnitz , Lavamünd , Mežica , Neuhaus , Prevalje , Ravne na Koroškem , Sittersdorf and Zell .

The highest mountain peaks in the area of the Geopark are Hochobir , Petzen and Koschuta . The special geological situation with deeply cut valleys (so-called "trenches") is caused by the meeting of different tectonic plates at the periadriatic seam .

The Obir stalactite caves , the Trögerner Klamm and the former mine in Mežica, used for tourism, provide insights into the rock layers that form the mountains . The geopark also includes important archaeological sites and natural monuments.

In the past, the extraction of lead , zinc and iron, along with agriculture and forestry, contributed to the region's prosperity, today tourism plays an important role. A Geopark Information Center was set up in Bad Eisenkappel.
