Krakow has been a municipality in the Murau district of the Austrian state of Styria since the beginning of 2015 . It was created as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform from the municipalities of Krakaudorf , Krakauhintermühlen and Krakauschatten, which were dissolved at the end of 2014 . The Steirische Krakau has been part of the Bergsteigerdörfer -Initiative of the PES since 2008 .

geography

Krakaudorf is the main town in the Krakau Valley, a high plateau that extends east-west in the southern part of the Schladminger Tauern and has around 1450 inhabitants. On the north side of the plateau, northwest of Krakaudorf, lies the cadastral community Krakauhintermühlen, to the west, on the south side of the plateau, on the Salzburg border, the cadastral community Krakauschatten.

The municipality includes the following three localities and cadastral communities of the same name (residents as of January 1, 2020, area as of 2015):

history

Slavic settlers cleared the area from the 6th century . From the 9th century, Bavarian settlers also came to the Krakau Valley. Krakaudorf is one of the oldest settlements in the Rantentales, but was from the Middle Ages to the 16th century "Lessach" ( Slavic "with the people in the forest", not to be confused with the west in Lungau lying Lessach ). The place name Krakau itself (first mentioned as a field name in 1304 as "Graker") comes from Slavic, it is derived from the crow or jackdaw ( krakowa , krakava ), hence the municipal coat of arms .

From the 13th century the area was subject to the jurisdiction of the Liechtensteiners. In the Middle Ages there were various landlords. From the 17th century the area was mainly owned by the Schwarzenberg princes. In 1791 the Vicariate of Ortisei was established in Krakau plain and in 1829 it was elevated to a parish.

The abolition of the manorial lords took place in 1848. The local parishes as an autonomous body came into being in 1850. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the parishes became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 they were part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

Every second year in February, the carnival fans return on “Damisch Mountog” (Rose Monday); a loud parade from house to house of about 50 people in pointed hats, followed by a merchant pack with horse, horse servant, smith, blacksmith etc. The origin of this custom goes back to the miners who lived around 200 years ago in the Bischofsloch des Prebers (2740 m ) Mining silver. These miners performed the circular dance, the Radl or Kranzl for the first time.
  • Brand high timbered in many places in the valley sometimes up to twelve meters at Easter Easter fire . Oswald Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday in August . The parish fair in honor of Saint Oswald begins with a procession through Krakaudorf, where the girls carry decorated statues of the Virgin Mary, the boys carry Saint Oswald through the village. In the afternoon, the Samson and the rifle guard make their appearance.
