The film was shot over several years in the prisons of Drumheller , Canada , as well as Cardiff , Wales and Pollsmoor in Cape Town , South Africa , where Nelson Mandela was also imprisoned for six years. For the sake of authenticity, the shooting took place in the midst of hundreds of prisoners, which demanded a lot from the actors.
