Grete Scheuer

Grete Scheuer (born June 6, 1900 in Thörl , Aflenz , † February 23, 1988 in Graz ) was an Austrian writer.

Life

Grete Scheuer was born on June 6, 1900 in Thörl near Aflenz. Her father, Rudolf Scheuer, was a works doctor in Thörl. She spent her childhood in the place where she was born. At the age of twelve she came into contact with literature and at the age of fourteen corresponded with the Upper Austrian writer Enrica von Handel-Mazzetti . From 1931 she worked as a journalist and writer in Berlin. In 1933 Grete Scheuer's first novel, film actress Maria Weidmann, was published by Rowohlt Verlag . In 1938 she moved to Vienna, where she lived until the end of the Second World War. The book The Long Night was written in the Austrian capital about her experiences in the air raid shelter. Two years after the end of the war (1947) the writer moved to Graz and lived there until the end of her life. Grete Scheuer died of a stroke on the night of February 22nd to 23rd, 1988. She was buried on March 1, 1988 in her hometown of Aflenz.
