The castle was built as one of the last hilltop castles in Styria in 1464 by Abbot Johann II Schachner von Lambrecht as a summer residence and manor and also served to block the thoroughfare. The fortress was expanded twice, between 1630 and 1740. At the end of the 18th century it lost its function, was given up and fell into ruin.

The old mansion of the upper plant is called the old house, it is located on the upper bridge. The mighty, broad three-storey building has a crooked roof and is essentially late-Gothic (gate walls and walls on the ground floor). It was originally owned by the Pögl family , later the Pleyberger and Fürst families, and in 1805 it came into the possession of the hammer lord Vinzenz Pengg, whose descendants, the family (from) Pengg-Auheim, still own the old house today.

The building complex developed in several construction phases from a fortification or road block from the 14th century. Their remains have been preserved in the Jägerturm to this day. The core of the building consists of two two- to three-storey wings from the 15th century that are hooked together. The former street passage led through the barrel-vaulted passage hall, over whose round arch there is a fresco in the baroque style. Late Gothic fresco fragments can still be seen on the courtyard side of the gate tower, which is covered with a tent roof. The one in the opposite Jägerturm was provided with a neo-Gothic battlement in the 19th century.

Originally planned as a section of a projected rail connection from Mürz Valley to Mariazell , the narrow-gauge railway was opened in 1893. The railway brought the region economic upswing, primarily through freight transport, and the iron industry in particular benefited from the then modern and efficient means of transport. The route was never very important for passenger traffic, as the larger towns such as Aflenz or Turnau are far away from the route and the connection to the Mariazellerbahn was never realized.

In the interior of the church, the passion of Jesus is depicted on fourteen stained glass windows. This way of the cross was designed by the Styrian artist Hans Fronius . The windows are made of French cathedral glass and were processed with black solder and painted directly without the help of sketches, the artist reduced the representations to the essentials. Werner Augustiner and Franz Kölldorfer designed two additional windows . The altar cross was created by Alexander Silveri .
