Mark Francis Schmitt

Mark Francis Schmitt (born February 14, 1923 in Algoma , † December 14, 2011 in De Pere , Wisconsin) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Marquette .

Life

Mark Francis Schmitt studied from 1937 to 1943 at the Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz and from 1943 to 1948 at St. Benedict College and at St. John's University in Collegeville. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Green Bay on May 22, 1948 . He initially worked at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay. He then was assistant pastor at the parish of St. Rose of Lima in Clintonville and St. Peter and Paul in Weyauwega. 1969/70 he was pastor in St. Bernard.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on April 30, 1970 auxiliary bishop in Green Bay and titular bishop of Ceanannus Mór . The Bishop of Green Bay Aloysius John Wycislo consecrated him on June 24 of the same year; Co- consecrators were John Benjamin Grellinger , Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus at Green Bay, and Frederick William Freking , Bishop of La Crosse . He was responsible for the apostolate of Manitowoc, diocesan director of Catholic hospitals, chairman of the commission for art and architecture and most recently director of pastoral planning.

On March 21, 1978 Schmitt was by Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Marquette and introduced to the office on May 8 of the same year. He was particularly committed to the lay apostolate.

On October 6, 1992, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
