John Doerfler (born November 2, 1964 in Appleton ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Marquette .

Life

John Doerfler studied at Saint Paul and at the Pontifical North America College in Rome. On July 13, 1991, he received the sacrament of ordination for the Diocese of Green Bay . He served as parish vicar in Littele Chute near Appleton and at Green Bay Cathedral . In 1997 he graduated from the Catholic University of America with a licentiate in canon law . He graduated from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, DC in 1999 with a degree in moral theology and in 2007 received his doctorate theologiae .

In the Diocese of Green Bay he worked, among other things, as a marriage bond defender and diocesan judge as well as the diocese's vice-chancellor. Since 2005 he has been vicar general .

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Marquette on December 17, 2013 . The Archbishop of Detroit , Allen Vigneron , ordained him episcopal on February 14 the following year . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Portland, Oregon , Alexander K. Sample , and the Bishop of Green Bay, David Ricken .
