Joseph Alphonse McNicholas

Joseph Alphonse McNicholas (born January 13, 1923 in St. Louis , Missouri , United States , † April 17, 1983 ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Springfield, Illinois .

Life

Joseph Alphonse McNicholas was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Saint Louis on June 7, 1949 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 31, 1969 auxiliary bishop in Saint Louis and titular bishop of Scala . The Archbishop of Saint Louis, John Joseph Carberry , ordained him episcopal on March 25 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Coadjutor Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis , Leo Christopher Byrne , and the Bishop of Kansas City-Saint Joseph , Charles Herman Helmsing .

On July 22, 1975, he was named Bishop of Springfield, Illinois .
