John Carberry
Cardinal John Joseph Carberry (born July 31, 1904 in Brooklyn , New York , USA , † June 17, 1998 in Kirkwood , Missouri , USA) was an American clergyman and Archbishop of Saint Louis .
Life
John Carberry was born as a child to James Joseph Carberry and his wife Mary Elizabeth, b. O'Keefe, born in Brooklyn. He studied at the Pontifical Academy of the Immaculate Conception in Rome and at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC Catholic theology and philosophy and a doctorate then to Dr. iur. can. On June 28, 1929, he received the sacrament of ordination through Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani in Rome .
He then worked as a pastor in the Brooklyn diocese and was temporarily a lecturer at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington (New York) and secretary to the Brooklyn diocesan bishop Thomas E. Molloy . Pope Pius XII awarded him on February 3, 1948 the title of secret chamberlain of His Holiness and on May 7, 1954 the title of House Prelate of His Holiness .
On May 3, 1956 Pius XII appointed him. the titular bishop of Elis and Coadjutor Bishop in the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana . He received episcopal ordination on July 25 of the same year by the Brooklyn auxiliary bishop , Raymond Augustine Kearney . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Trenton , George William Ahr , and John Benjamin Grellinger , Auxiliary Bishop of Green Bay .
After the death of the Bishop of Lafayette in Indiana, John George Bennet , on November 20, 1957, he succeeded him. On January 20, 1965, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as Bishop of Columbus and on February 14, 1968 as Archbishop of Saint Louis.
In the consistory of April 28, 1969 Paul VI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Giovanni Battista de Rossi in the College of Cardinals . Carberry was a participant in the August 1978 conclave , which John Paul I elected, and in the October 1978 conclave , from which John Paul II emerged as Pope. On July 31, 1979, John Paul II accepted Carberry's resignation due to reasons of age.
John Carberry died at the age of 93 years and was in the crypt of the cathedral buried by Saint Louis.
