George Joseph Lucas (born June 12, 1949 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Omaha .

Life

The Archbishop of Saint Louis , Cardinal John Joseph Carberry , ordained him a priest on May 24, 1975 .

Pope John Paul II named him Bishop of Springfield, Illinois on October 19, 1999 . The Archbishop of Chicago , Cardinal Francis Eugene George OMI , ordained him episcopal on December 14 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were Gabriel Montalvo Higuera , Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America , and Daniel Leo Ryan , Former Bishop of Springfield, Illinois. As a motto he chose Grace and Mercy .

He was named Archbishop of Omaha on June 3, 2009, and inducted into office on July 22 of the same year.

Pope Francis also appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Lincoln on December 13, 2019 for the duration of the diocesan bishop's illness-related absence .
