Patrick Joseph Cardinal Hayes (born November 20, 1867 in Five Points Manhattan , New York , † September 4, 1938 in Monticello ) was Archbishop of New York .

Life

Hayes parents, Daniel and Mary Hayes (née Gleason), were from County Kerry , Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1864. His younger brother John was born in 1870. Hayes' mother died in June 1872. His father remarried in 1876 and his half-sister Anastasia was born that year. At the age of 15 he moved in with his aunt and uncle who ran a grocery store and helped out with them.

After attending the La Salle Academy, he studied at Manhattan College , where he excelled in philosophy and the ancient languages ​​of Latin and Ancient Greek , which he graduated with honors in 1888 with a Bachelor of Arts . In Manhattan he also met his friend George Mundelein , who later became Archbishop of Chicago . Hayes then attended St. Joseph's Seminary in Troy .

Hayes was ordained a priest on September 8, 1892, through Michael Augustine Corrigan , Archbishop of New York . He continued his studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC , where he obtained a licentiate in Catholic theology in 1894 .

On his return to New York, he became curate of the St. Gabriel Congregation on the Lower East Side , which was led by John Murphy Farley (later Archbishop of New York).
