Cardinal John Murphy Farley (born April 20, 1842 in Newton-Hamilton , Ireland , † September 17, 1918 in Mamaroneck , New York ) was an Irish-American and Archbishop of New York .

Life

John Murphy Farley received his theological and philosophical training in Monaghan , New York and Rome . He received on 11 June 1870, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a deputy church rector in New Brighton , Staten Iceland . From 1872 to 1884 he was the personal secretary of the Archbishop of New York John McCloskey , whom he accompanied to the conclave in Rome in 1878 , where they did not arrive until after the election of the Pope. In 1884 he became parish priest in New York, from 1891 to 1902 John Murphy Farley was vicar general in the administration of the Archdiocese of New York. In 1892 he received the title of papal house prelate , in 1894 that of apostolic protonotary .

On November 18, 1895, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . as titular bishop of Zeugma in Syria and auxiliary bishop in New York. He received his episcopal ordination from Archbishop Michael Augustine Corrigan on December 21 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Brooklyn , Charles Edward McDonnell , and the Bishop of Ogdensburg , Henry Gabriels . On September 15, 1902, Farley was named Archbishop of New York. Pope Pius X accepted him on November 27, 1911 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria sopra Minerva in the college of cardinals . John Murphy Farley attended the 1914 conclave that Benedict XV. chose. In the First World War he saw a chance for peace only through a German defeat. Cardinal Farley attached particular importance to strengthening the Catholic education system. He died on September 17, 1918 in Mamaroneck and was in the Cathedral buried in New York.
