Gerald Frederick Kicanas (born August 18, 1941 in Chicago ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Tucson .

Life

The Archbishop of Chicago , Cardinal John Patrick Cody , ordained him a priest on April 27, 1967 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Chicago and titular bishop of Bela on January 24, 1995 . The Archbishop of Chicago, Joseph Louis Cardinal Bernardin , donated him episcopal ordination on March 20 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Chicago Alfred Leo Abramowicz and Timothy Joseph Lyne . As a motto he chose Justice begets peace .

He was named Coadjutor Bishop of Tucson on October 30, 2001, and inducted into office on January 15 of the next year. With the resignation of Manuel Duran Moreno on March 7, 2003, he succeeded him as Bishop of Tucson.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on October 3, 2017.

From September 28, 2018 to July 23, 2019, he was Apostolic Administrator of Las Cruces during the Sedis vacancy .

Kicanas is the Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
