John Raphael Quinn

John Raphael Quinn (born March 28, 1929 in Riverside , California - † June 22, 2017 in San Francisco , California) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco .

Life

John Quinn studied theology and philosophy at the Pontifical North America College in Rome and was ordained a priest there on July 19, 1953 for the diocese of San Diego . He was active in pastoral care and as a teacher at the diocesan seminary of the diocese of San Diego. In 1964 he became Provost of the University of San Diego .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 21, 1967 auxiliary bishop in San Diego and titular bishop of Thisiduo . The Apostolic Delegate to the United States of America , Archbishop Luigi Raimondi , ordained him episcopal on December 12 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Francis James Furey , Bishop of San Diego and Frederick William Freking , Bishop of La Crosse .

On November 30, 1971, he was named bishop of Oklahoma City-Tulsa . With the elevation to the archbishopric on December 13, 1972 he was named Archbishop of Oklahoma City. On February 16, 1977, Pope Paul VI appointed him. to the Archbishop of San Francisco . The inauguration took place on April 26th of the same year. From 1977 to 1980 Quinn was also President of the American Bishops' Conference . On December 27, 1995, Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation.

John Quinn was particularly committed to two social hot spots in San Francisco, AIDS prevention and the refugees from Central America.
