John James Ward

John James Ward (born September 28, 1920 in Los Angeles , † January 10, 2011 in Culver City ) was a Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles .

Life

The son of Irish immigrants entered St. John's Seminary in Camarillo in 1940 . On May 4, 1946 John James Ward received Archbishop John Cantwell , the ordination . From 1949 to 1952 he studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and obtained a licentiate in canon law .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 16, 1963 titular bishop of Bria and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles. The Archbishop of Los Angeles, James Francis Aloysius Cardinal McIntyre , donated him episcopal ordination on December 12 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Joseph Thomas McGucken , Archbishop of San Francisco , and Alden John Bell , Bishop of Sacramento . Ward took over as a Council Father of at the third and fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council in part.

On May 7, 1996, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation and on June 15, 1996 appointed him Titular Bishop of California . With almost 33 years in office, he was the longest active auxiliary bishop in the United States.

John Ward was Commander with Star (KC * HS) of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
