General break
A general pause , abbreviation: GP ( Italian vuoto ; French silence ; English general rest ), in music is an interruption in all parts of a piece of music at the same time. It extends over more than one measure in pieces at a faster tempo and reaches its greatest effect on polyphonic orchestral pieces. If the general pause is provided with a fermata , it is not lengthened but shortened.
The general pause appears suddenly and noticeably in the flow of the music . This creates tension and expectations in the listener. This tension often leads to the climax of the piece.
