Lost Tribe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lost Tribe was an American band from New York , who used different styles such as rock , funk and jazz in their music in almost exclusively instrumental form.

Band history

The band was formed from a number of session musicians, some of whom had only had little studio experience until then. Guitarist David Gilmore had been a permanent member of Steve Coleman's band Five Elements for several years , while Ben Perowsky was a drummer a. a. had worked for Bob Berg , Mike Stern and John Zorn . The other members should only gain a foothold in the years in which the Lost Tribe was active.

The unifying element of almost all pieces is the instrumental performance, only on some tracks there is spoken chanting based on rap . On the first album , produced by Walter Becker , a common fusion character characterizes the tracks, some of which feature Gilmore's repetitive style and various sound effects, the latter lending the music an additional urban note. In addition, the relationship to the contributions made by Gilmore within the music of Steve Coleman is clearly noticeable in some places. The band diversified the style introduced with the debut album without completely giving up one continuous line. The second album is still very similar to the first and sometimes offers an even heavier style up to the heavy metal echoes of the last track. In the third and last album, which was released a little later, the jazz component was finally swept out more at the expense of the rock and funk component, but at the same time the greatest stylistic variability was offered. One reason for this change lies in Gilmore's exit after the second album, the final work was recorded by the rest of the quartet. The band did not have a sole or main composer; each member contributed compositions on an equal basis.

Despite the end of the band, several members worked together on other projects in the following years , for example David Binney and Adam Rogers guested on Fima Ephron's album Soul Machine (2001), on the self-titled debut album by bassist Matthew Garrison , which was released in the same year, were Binney, Gilmore and Rogers heard. The latter began recording solo albums in 2002 and played on Norah Jones ' debut album, while Ephron became a member of the Screaming Headless Torsos . Binney and Ben Perowsky are also active under their own names.
