William Arthur Pailes (born June 26, 1952 in Hackensack , New Jersey , USA ) is a former American astronaut .

Pailes received a bachelor's degree in computer science from the United States Air Force Academy in 1974 and a master's degree in computer science from Texas A&M University in 1981 .

In 1974 Pailes completed his pilot training with the United States Air Force . After stationing in Arizona, California, Great Britain and Illinois, he joined the Air Force's Manned Spaceflight Engineering Program (MSE) at Edwards Air Force Base in January 1983 .

On October 3, 1985, Pailes flew as a payload specialist on the maiden flight of the space shuttle Atlantis . The mission was to deploy two military DSCS III communications satellites. These were brought into geostationary orbit using an IUS rocket stage .

Pailes applied in vain for the twelfth NASA astronaut group and then left NASA in July 1987. He was then stationed with the Air Force Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field, Florida. From 1992 to 1995 he was director of the Defense Information Systems Agency at the Pentagon. In October 1995 he resigned from the Air Force. Since August 2002 he has been an instructor in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) in Corsicana, Texas.
