Gene Perla (born March 1, 1940 in Hackensack / New Jersey ) is an American jazz bassist.

Perla first learned the piano, then played the trombone while in high school. He first studied industrial engineering at the University of Toledo . Only then did he decide to become a musician, studied at Berklee College of Music and switched to bass. He then became a member of the band Los Muchachos , which Don Alias ​​also belonged to. From 1969 to 1970 he was a member of Woody Hermans Orchestra, then worked with the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra , Sarah Vaughan and from 1971 to 1973 with Elvin Jones .

In the mid-1970s, Perla founded the PM (Perla Music) label and shortly thereafter the run Plug label . a. with Dave Liebman , Elvin Jones , Steve Grossman , Pat LaBarbera and Jerry Bergonzi . Since 1975 he has been working with the Stone Alliance group (with Steve Grossman and Don Alias). He also appeared as a sideman a. a. with Willie Bob , Jan Hammer , Jeremy Steig , Nina Simone , Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins . He has been a member of the Fine Wine Trio with Richard Wyands and Bobby Kapp since the late 1990s . With his Go-Trio he was touring internationally with the singer Viktorija Gečytė .

Perla initially taught at William Paterson University and currently at Lehigh University .
