Harold H. (Hal) Carstens (born June 20, 1925 in Fort Lee (New Jersey) , † June 23, 2009 Newton (New Jersey) ) was an American magazine publisher and author.

Life

Hal Carstens attended Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, New Jersey and Wagner College . During his military service he attended the Army Radiology School in Memphis and was stationed with the 103rd Medical Service Company in the Philippines during World War II . He then studied journalism and art at the military institute in Manila.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1952. Hal Carstens began to work in 1952 as Associate Editor (Editor) at Penn Publications for the model train magazines " Railroad Model Craftsman " and "Toy Trains". He also completed evening classes at Fairleigh Dickinson University. In 1954 he became managing editor (editor-in-chief) of the two magazines and in 1957 editor (publisher) and vice-president. After the resignation of the founder of the magazine Charles A. Penn , he took over the presidency of the publishing house in 1962, which later operated under the name Carstens Publications.

Carstens was the author of many articles about the model railway, the railway, photography and other things in the magazines of his own publishing house as well as in magazines of other publishers.

In addition to his publishing activities, Hal Carstens was president and managing director of the trade association "Hobby Industries of America" ​​from 1971 to 1972, on whose board he also sat for eleven years. He was responsible for various working groups (advertising, education, publishers, model railways). He was also president of the "Train Collectors Association", the "Model Railroad Industry Association" and board member and managing director of the "Eastern Model Railroad Manufacturer's Association".

Hal Carstens served on the board of directors of Wagner College for eleven years, including two as secretary. He was also president of the New Jersey Railroad and Transportation Museum Friends Association . He was also a member of the Photographic Society of America, the Newton Rotary Club and was also church active.

He has received awards from the National Model Railroad Association , the Hobby Industries of America, the Model Railroad Industry Association, and other associations for his diverse activities to promote the model railroad as a hobby.
