Film plot and use of music

The film takes place at the time of the Second World War. The 10-year-old Jojo Betzler is a member of the Hitler Youth. When he returns home from a youth camp, he discovers that his mother has hidden a fifteen-year-old Jewish girl with her. Because he doesn't know what to do, he turns to his imaginary friend.

The famous Fox fanfare at the beginning of the film was replaced by fictional German songs, in the following opening credits the song Come, give me your hand of the Beatles is played. The song Helden by David Bowie can be heard during the credits .

The soundtrack, which includes a total of 12 pieces of music, was released for download from Hollywood Records on October 18, 2019. In addition to three film music pieces by Giacchino and Helden and Come, give me your hand , the album also features the songs I Don't Wanna Grow Up by Tom Waits , Mama by Roy Orbison and Everybody's Gotta Live by Love , as well as two pieces of classical music, one from the opera Faust by Charles Gounod and Spring Voices by Johann Strauss Sohn . A separate album with all of Giacchino's score was released at the same time.
