Gerald Wirth (* 1965 in Linz ) is an Austrian conductor , composer and choir teacher. Since 2001 he has been artistic director of the Vienna Boys' Choir , and since 2013 also president of the association.

Life

Gerald Wirth received his first musical training with the Vienna Boys' Choir and at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz. He was Kapellmeister with the Vienna Boys' Choir and choir director at the Salzburg State Theater. In 1991 he took over the direction of the Calgary Boys' Choir; subsequently he became musical director of the Calgary Civic Symphony and the vocal ensemble Sangita. He was Associate Conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (guest conductors in Australia, China, Russia and the United States).

His main interest is working with voices: In 1998 Wirth became deputy artistic director of the Vienna Boys' Choir, and in 2001 its artistic director. On September 17, 2013 he was also elected President of the Association. He holds international workshops on performance practice, choir conducting and voice training.

Most of his compositions are vocal works; these include his Missa Apostolica (1988) and the children's operas The Journey of the Little Prince , Die Schicksalstafel and 1398 - Der Bettelknabe , premiered in 2010 at the Vienna Musikverein . Wirth's works are often inspired by myths or philosophical texts. In the musical implementation Gerald Wirth combines Gregorian chant, rhythmic elements and elements of ethnic music.

In 2003 he founded the wirth music academy to train and further educate choir directors using the Wirth method. The Wirth method is a music-pedagogical approach that combines classical music theory, sound awareness, ear training, rhythm training and sight seeing in a choir teaching concept.
