Varg Königsmark (born April 28, 1992 in Bergen on Rügen ) is a former German 400-meter hurdler .

Life

His greatest successes include winning the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles and the bronze medal with the 4 x 400 meter relay at the European Junior Athletics Championships 2011 in Tallinn . This year he took first place in the junior world rankings with a time of 49.70 s, which only missed Harald Schmid's German U20 record by 9 hundredths and was the sixth fastest time ever run by a European in the junior division. A year earlier, Königsmark secured fourth place in the final of the U20 World Championships, making it the fastest European.

At the national level he was two German youth champions and two German junior champions. At his first German Active Championships in 2012, Varg Königsmark just missed a medal and finished fourth.

Also in 2012 Königsmark missed the leap to the Olympic Games in London , but was able to draw attention to itself through constant races in the 49er area.

In the last race of the 2012 season, his farewell race in front of a home crowd in Berlin at the ISTAF Meeting , he was able to take 5th place in a strong field around Olympic champion Félix Sánchez . With 49.58 seconds, he again underpinned his form. In September he separated from his long-time Berlin trainer Bernd Knobloch. Since October, the 1.94 m tall Langhürdler has been training at the Magdeburg Olympic base under the supervision of Marco Kleinsteuber. He trains there with Thomas Schneider , Eric Krüger and Janin Lindenberg , among others . In 2014 Königsmark took part in the European Championships in Zurich , where he first ran his personal best in the semi-finals (49.12 s) and then finished 7th.

Due to persistent Achilles tendon problems, Königsmark had to end his sporting career. After the European Championships, with the exception of one race on June 4, 2016 in Regensburg, he was unable to contest any more competitions. At the beginning of 2017, at the age of 24, he announced his retirement from competitive sports.

The High School graduated Varg Königsmark 2011 on Education and Sports Center Berlin , in October 2012, he studied psychology at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg .
