Troy is a city in Madison County in the west of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Troy had 8,524 inhabitants.

The city is part of the region called Metro-East , which includes the eastern part of the Illinois metropolitan area around St. Louis in Missouri .

Troy is 17 miles east of the Mississippi River , which forms the border with Missouri .

The Illinois State Route 162 runs through the center of Troy and joins US Highway 40 southwest of the city, which runs in an east-west direction . On the western and northern outskirts of Troy run Interstate 55 , which is the shortest connection from St. Louis and Chicago , and Interstate 70 from St. Louis to Indianapolis .

In the 2000 census, the population was 8,524. These were distributed over 3,100 households in 2,356 families. The population density was 961.0 / km². There were 3,129 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 292.4 / km².
