The State Route begins on Illinois State Route 203 in Granite City and ends 16 miles east of Troy on US Highway 40 .

From Granite City, the road to the northeast and meets in the south of Pontoon Beach on the Illinois State Route 111 and east of the city on Interstate 255 . In the west of the city of Maryville it crosses Illinois State Route 157 and in the center of the village the Illinois State Route 159 . West of Troy, the IL 162 meets Interstates 55 and 70 .
