Glen Carbon is a village with 10,425 inhabitants (as of 2000) in the US state of Illinois . It is located 14 miles northeast of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri and belongs to Madison County .

The place is in the eastern part of the metropolitan area Greater St. Louis called Metro-East .

geography

Glen Carbon's geographic coordinates are 38 ° 46 '  N , 89 ° 58'  W (38.759801, −89.969204). According to information from the United States Census Bureau from 2010, the village has an area of ​​26.4 km 2 , of which 26.0 km 2 is land and 0.39 km 2 (= 1.47%) is water . The district of the town northeast of St. Louis is hilly, irregularly shaped, and the buildings are not contiguous. In the northwest, north and northeast, Glen Carbon borders directly on Edwardsville , on the other sides are unincorporated parts of Edwardsville Township . Glen Carbon is crossed from west to east by Interstate 270 . Illinois State Route 159 runs through the town in north-south direction, Illinois State Route 157 forms the city limit to the northwest. Illinois State Route 152, which runs in a west-east direction, is south of the urban area. A former railway line runs through the southwest of Glen Carbons and forms the city limits to the southeast. The eastern city limits also coincide with the route of an abandoned railway line.

The urban area is drained by several streams that flow south to Judys Branch . Thus, Glen Carbon lies in the catchment area of Cahokia Creek and over it the Mississippi River . Several lakes and water reservoirs are located within the urban area.

history

The village got its name from James Harry Lister, a native of England, who was one of the first local councilors. Originally the place was called Carbon Glen, which roughly means "Valley of Coal", but tradition has it that the order of the two words was reversed because Lister's daughter thought it would sound better that way. A post office was established on January 6, 1892.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Glen Carbon lived in 10,425 people. The population density was 542.5 people per km ². There were 4236 housing units at an average of 220.4 per km ². The Glen Carbon population was 89.09% White , 6.96% Black or African American , 0.20% Native American , 2.12% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.41% said others Belonging to races and 1.17% named two or more races. 1.50% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Glen Carbons were distributed to 4011 households out of which 34.9% were living in children under 18 years of age. 59.6% of households were married, 8.1% had a female head of household without a husband and 29.8% were not families. 22.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.8% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.06.

The population was divided into 25.3% minors, 10.2% 18–24 year olds, 30.0% 25–44 year olds, 23.5% 45–64 year olds and 11.0% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 women there were 94.5 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 91.5 men.

The median household income in Glen Carbon was 55,841 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 72,182 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 50,086 compared with $ 31,689 for women. The per capita income was $ 26,374. 5.8% of the population and 3.2% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 5.8% of minors and 6.2% of those aged 65 and over.
