history

In the winter of 1803-1804, Camp DuBois near what is now the town of Wood River was the starting point for the Lewis and Clark expedition , which had prepared the later conquest by white settlers. Until then, most of the land had been left to the indigenous people and a few fur hunters and traders.

While many cities in the region developed by leaps and bounds in the 19th century, railroad tracks and individual farmhouses determined the image of human settlement in the area of today's city. That changed only with the establishment of a Standard Oil refinery in 1907. Many of the company's workers settled in the area. In the same year, A. E. Benbow , a local entrepreneur, founded the city of Benbow City. The town of Wood River was founded in the neighborhood in 1908 and made a town. Their population increased and the city began to dominate the region. In 1917, Benbow City was incorporated into Wood River.

In the 1920s, Wood River was one of the fastest growing cities in the country and there were more workers than houses. So Standard Oil bought a number of prefabricated houses from Sears' mail order catalog .

Today Wood River is a well developed town with small businesses, shops, schools, and churches. Not far from the junction of Illinois State Routes 3 and 143 is a replica of Camp DuBois, where the time of the French trappers and the Lewis and Clark expedition is remembered every year.
