Jean Louise Stothert (* 7. February 1954 as Jean Louise Belanger in Wood River , Illinois ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . She has been the mayor of Omaha , the largest city in the US state of Nebraska , since 2013 .

Life

Jean Stothert studied nursing science at Seattle Pacific University , where he received a Bachelor of Science . After graduation, she worked as a nurse in intensive care and later as head nurse and nursing manager at Saint Louis University . In 1992 Jean Stothert moved to Omaha. In 2009, she was as a representative of fünten district in the city council elected by Omaha.

On June 29, 2012, Jean Stothert, a member of the Republican Party, announced her candidacy for the mayoral election of Omaha the following year. In the election on April 2, 2013, Stothert received the most votes with 32.2%, but not the required absolute majority . In the runoff election on May 14, 2013, she prevailed with 57.32% of the vote against her Democratic challenger and predecessor Jim Suttle . She was sworn into office on June 10, 2013. Jean Stothert is the first female mayor of the city of Omaha. Stothert was re-elected on May 10, 2017.

Jean Stothert has been married to medical doctor Joseph Stothert since 1981 and has two children.
