The Illinois State Route 3 is the most important regional north-south connection in southwestern Illinois. The southern terminus is 5.2 km north of downtown Cairo at the junction of US Highway 51 and Interstate 57 . The northern end point is the confluence with Illinois State Route 100 in the center of Crafton . The total length is 301.66 km.

Route description

The Illinois State Route is four lanes from Waterloo to Godfrey and six lanes with a small section through Granite City and around Alton .

The southern section from Waterloo to the end near Cairo is two lanes and runs on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest .

The road runs parallel to the Mississippi River and is part of the section of the Great River Road through Illinois for most of its route . Illinois State Route 3 passes a number of historic sites, including the former capital, Kaskaskia .

history

The original Illinois State Route 3 ran from Cairo to Morrison in northwest Illinois north of the Quad Cities . With the completion of the Clark Bridge in Alton, US Highway 67 was led over the route of the former Illinois State Route 3 and this was shortened accordingly.
