Makanda Township is about 40 km east of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Missouri . The mouth of the Ohio at the intersection of the states of Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky is around 75 km south.

Makanda Township is located in the extreme southeast of Jackson County and is bordered by Williamson County to the east and Union County to the south . Within Jackson County, Makanda Township borders Pomona Township in the west, Murphysboro Township in the northwest and Carbondale Township in the north .
