Viktor Glondys (born December 7, 1882 in Bielsko-Biała , Silesia , † October 28, 1949 in Sibiu , Transylvania ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian and bishop of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Romania .

Life

Glondys was the son of the Catholic master baker Joseph Glondys (1834-1906) and his wife Johanna, who raised a total of five children. His father Joseph felt more like a citizen of the Austro-Hungarian state than a member of the German people. From 1889 to 1893 Glondys attended the German elementary school in Biala and from 1894 to 1901 the humanistic grammar school in Bielitz (Silesia). Then he studied philosophy in Graz . He became more and more alienated from the Roman Catholic Church, instead he found access to Martin Luther's doctrine of justification and its significance for the Protestant faith. For this reason he converted to the Evangelical Church in 1903. He studied Protestant Lutheran theology in Vienna and Marburg (Lahn) and passed his exams in Vienna. In 1907 he became vicar in Eisenau ( Bukowina ), where he worked to support the pastor of Jakobeny . In 1909 he was elected vicar in Chernivtsi and in 1911 the city pastor. In addition , he received his doctorate in philosophy in Graz in 1917 and completed his habilitation in 1919 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Chernivtsi . In 1922 he became parish priest in Kronstadt , in 1930 episcopal vicar and in November 1932 bishop of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Romania.

As early as 1931, in a sermon on the parable of the Good Samaritan, he spoke out against the racist alienation by the representatives of a national theology within his church and the Transylvanian-Saxon nationality . The universal love command of Jesus applies

"Just as for Chinese and Negroes as for Jews and Westerners, just as in the time of Jesus as today and at all times."

During his tenure, Glondys had to defend himself against multiple attacks by ethnic and anti-Semitic forces. One of the most fanatical representatives was the pastor of Birk , Friedrich Benesch . In 1936/1937 there was impeachment proceedings against this pastor by the consistory of the Evangelical Church under Bishop Viktor Glondys because of Benesch's National Socialist political activities. In 1939 Benesch applied to join the SS , whereupon he was listed as an "SS applicant" until his application was withdrawn. He later left the Evangelical Church and switched to anthroposophy . He became a priest and teacher of the Christian community .

Representatives of Nazi ideology in the church forced Glondys into retirement in February 1941 . Regardless of this, he continued his theological work in the Luther Academy of Sibiu . However, when the internal political situation in Romania changed dramatically as a result of the revolt of anti-Nazi forces against the Antonescu regime, he returned to his episcopal office on August 23, 1944 and retired in 1945, but resumed lecturing at the Luther Academy. Glondys represented the Evangelical Church AB in Romania in the Lutheran World Federation and in the Gustav-Adolf-Werk . He was the founder and leader of the working group of the German Evangelical Churches in Southeast Europe and a member of the Senate of the Luther Academy in Sondershausen .

Viktor Glondys was married to the Councilor daughter Alice Mayer and had with her son Kurt.
