Johann Böhm (born September 25, 1929 in Botsch ( Batoș ), Northern Transylvania , Romania ) is a German historian.

Life

Böhm graduated from the Schäßburg teacher training college in Transylvania (Romania) in 1952 . From 1960 to 1965 he studied German and history at the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj . After moving to Germany, he studied political science , history and education at the University of Bochum from 1971 to 1975 . The title of Dr. phil. he received in 1984 at the University of Cologne .

The turmoil of the war and post-war in his homeland prompted him to deal intensively with the history of the 20th century . In his historical works, Böhm investigated the extent to which the fate of the German minority in Romania was influenced by developments in the German- speaking area and to what extent the post-war situation of this minority was a result of the processes within Germany. His works contributed to a nuanced view of Southeast European history.

The publication of the diary of the evangelical bishop of the Evangelical Church from Transylvania (AB) Viktor Glondys , ostracized by the National Socialists , which he and Dieter Braeg titled Diary in 1997, is regarded as a special publishing achievement . Edited records from 1933 to 1949 .

In 1988 Böhm founded the "Working Group for History and Culture in East Central and Southeast Europe eV" together with several academics. The aim of the working group was to promote the incomplete processing of the history of Southeast Europe and to make it known through scientifically founded work. Around 100 academics, writers and publicists supported this project with numerous articles that were published in the working group's journal, the semi-annual publication for Southeast European history, literature and politics .
