Gabriel Alfonso López Zapiain (born April 22, 1943 in Irapuato , Guanajuato , † August 18, 2018 in Guadalajara Jalisco ), also known by the nickname Nene , was a Mexican football player in the position of defender .

Life

"Nene" López Zapiain began his football career at his hometown club Club Deportivo Irapuato , where he was under contract from 1964 to 1971. He then moved to Club Deportivo Guadalajara , where he was under contract for eleven years and was a regular in the era of the " Chivas flacas " when the previously so successful club between 1970 and 1987 did not win a single title.

His only international game for the Mexican national soccer team , he completed on July 6, 1971 in a friendly against Greece , which was played in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City and ended 1: 1.

After his active career, López Zapiain worked in the 1989/90 season as assistant coach to Alberto Guerra at Club Universidad de Guadalajara and later returned to Club Deportivo Guadalajara, where he worked as an assistant to Hans Westerhof in the 2002/03 season . He also worked in the club's junior division and looked after its second team, Club Deportivo Tapatío .

López Zapiain died on August 18, 2018 at the age of 75.
