The Club Deportivo Tapatío is a former Mexican football club from Guadalajara , Jalisco , which as a branch of the team Club Deportivo Guadalajara acted. His nicknames are derived from the club name or the nickname of the "mother club": Tapatíos (as a derivation of the club name) denotes the inhabitants of Guadalajara; Cabritos is another goat name , referring to the Club Deportivo Guadalajara's nickname Chivas . The club logo shows a soccer ball and the spiers of Guadalajara Cathedral. The red and white stripes in the background are inspired by the coat of arms of the mother association Chivas.

history

The CD Tapatío was launched in 1973 after the CD Guadalajara had acquired a license for a club to be founded in the Tercera División , at that time the third highest division in Mexican club football .

After just two years, the club was promoted to the Segunda División , the second highest division at the time. In the 1980/81 season, Tapatío reached the finals against Morelia , which were narrowly lost 1: 1 and 0: 1. Two years later, the Cabritos rose to the Segunda División 'B' , which had been newly installed a year earlier , and played in this league until they were promoted again three years later at the end of the 1985/86 season.

After three more seasons in the Segunda División 'A', as the second division was officially called since the introduction of the Segunda 'B', relegation took place again at the end of the 1988/89 season. After five seasons in the Segunda 'B', Tapatío won the league for the second time at the end of the 1993/94 season and thus set two "records": on the one hand, Tapatío is the only club that was able to win the league, which existed only twelve years ago, twice and for others were the Cabritos at the same time the last champions of this league, which was set with the introduction of the Primera División 'A' in the 1994/95 season. In this respect, Tapatío succeeded in advancing to the Segunda División this time as well, but in fact this only corresponded to a change from the old third division to the new third division, which has been the Segunda División since 1994/95.

The return to the second division did not succeed in a sporting way, but by acquiring the license from Club Gallos de Aguascalientes . This process, which is quite common in the second Mexican division, coincided with the withdrawal of the Guadalajara-based Club Bachilleres , which had sold its license for the 2002/03 season at the same time.

Tapatío's first season in Primera 'A' was also the club's most successful season in this league. Both in the Apertura 2002 and in the Clausura 2003, the Cabritos were winners of their group, whereby they qualified for the play-offs . Both in the Apertura (in the semifinals against Irapuato ) and in the Clausura (in the final against León ) the Tapatíos lost to the eventual winner.

After the 2003/04 season, which was unsuccessful in terms of sport, the team was transplanted to La Piedad and given the new name Chivas La Piedad , which now also expresses its proximity to the mother club Chivas Guadalajara by name. After another messed up season (twice bottom of the group) the team was transferred to Tepic and appeared in 2005/06 as Chivas Coras (the middle name denotes an ethnic group living in the east of the state of Nayarit ). In that season, the Cabritos were group winners twice, but failed both in the Apertura 2005 and the Clausura 2006 in the quarter-finals of the play-offs that followed the half-season.

Then the team withdrew to Guadalajara while renaming them back to their original name, so that they played the last three seasons in the history of the Primera División 'A' (2006/07 to 2008/09) again as CD Tapatío.

With the restructuring of the second Mexican soccer league from the group consisting of the last 27 teams Primera División 'A' in the new, initially composed of only 17 teams Liga de Ascenso , the second division license Tapatios at the university club was Club Universidad de Guadalajara transferred who has represented the city in the second division since 2009/10.
