Tapatío
Tapatío is a Mexican name for a (male) person from Guadalajara , the second largest city in the country and capital of the state of Jalisco . A female person from Guadalajara is called tapatía , the plural is tapatíos or, if only female persons are referred to, tapatías . It is not only the people born or living in Guadalajara who are named this way, but in general everything related to the city.
origin
The name tapatío probably has its origin in the word Tlapatiotl , which comes from the Nahuatl and means something like "worth three". This was the principle on which Guadalajara's market system for bartering in the 17th century was based. The "Tlapatiotl worth three" refers to an exchange of three for three. Because the Spaniards had problems with the word, according to this interpretation, the name "tapatío" came about. People from other parts of Mexico heard the word occasionally and thought that it meant the people of Guadalajara, which is how the term actually became established over time.
