Jarocho is a Mexican name for a (male) person from the city of Veracruz , which is located in the state of Veracruz of the same name . A female person from Veracruz is called jarocha , the plural is jarochos or, if only female people are referred to, jarochas . It is not only the people born or living in the port city of Veracruz that are given this name, but in general everything related to the city. In contrast, the residents of the state or things that are related to it are referred to as veracruzanos (plural, masculine).

origin

The term jarochos used to refer to the coastal residents of the state of Veracruz in general and the residents of the Sotavento region in particular. In some of the state's provinces, rugged people used to be called jarochos . Over time, it became a common name for the residents of the port city of Veracruz, who are known for their coarse language, among other things. The etymological origin is the Latin word ferox , which means feroz in Spanish and means something like violent or rough or rugged .
