City of Bones (Clare)

City of Bones is a fantasy novel by the American author Cassandra Clare from 2007 and forms the first part of the Chronicles of the Underworld series (original title: The Mortal Instruments ). The German edition was translated by Franca Fritz and Heinrich Koop and was published by Arena-Verlag in early 2008 . A new edition has been published by Goldmann-Verlag since 2017 .

The main characters are fifteen-year-old Clarissa "Clary" Fray from New York and the mysterious Jace Wayland.

Clary's life suddenly changes when she and her best friend Simon go to a club one evening and watch a boy get killed and then suddenly disappear. She calls the security, but has to find out that only she can see the black-clad teenagers with black tattoos. Jace Wayland, one of the group, has a strong fascination with Clary. With this encounter, she embarks on the dark world of shadow hunters - half human, half angel, whose life's mission is to kill demons and protect humanity.

Clary moves into the "institute" where Jace and the other shadowhunters from his group live because their mother, who is also a shadowhunter, was kidnapped by demons. She feels more and more drawn to Jace Wayland. However, Jace is kidnapped by Valentin, the council's archenemy, and the two learn the truth about who they are and survive many dangerous situations together until the end.

Clarissa Adele, Clary 'Fray (Fairchild) Morgenstern : She is the fifteen-year-old protagonist who was raised as an only child by her single mother, who was also a shadow hunter, but kept it a secret from Clary to protect her. Clary has red curly hair and green eyes. She has complexities with when a girl is particularly beautiful and has therefore had no girlfriends and only one boyfriend, Simon. This changes when she meets Jace, Alec, and Isabelle who are shadow hunters. Clary is an artist and has a drawing diary that reflects her emotions. She admires her mother, although she finds her quite strict. She doesn't like to be called Clarissa, but prefers to be called Clary. She is often withdrawn, then dwells in her own world and later finds out with Jace's help that she is a shadow hunter and who her father is. Not only does Jace help her, he shows her what it means to love someone.
Jocelyn Fray (Fairchild) : She is Clarissa's mother, was a shadow hunter and belonged to the circle (an organization of Valentin to kill all demons, including the half-demons), but keeps this and all of her other past accompanied by supernatural things to herself to protect her daughter. She pretends that Clary's father died in a car accident before she was born and never talks about him to her daughter. Clary's father, one of the greatest threats to the world, is still alive. When Jocelyn is kidnapped by demons, she puts herself in a kind of coma.
Luke Garroway (Lucian Graymark) : He is Jocelyn's closest friend and owns a bookstore. He's a werewolf and like a father to Clary. He was also a former member of the circle and is initially dismissive to Clary. He later saves her from another former circle member. He loves Clary's mother and visits her in the hospital every day.
Simon Lewis : He's Clary's best friend. He plays in a band that spends most of their time looking for a name instead of rehearsing. In a conversation with Clary, he pretends to be looking for a girlfriend 'with a hot body', but has actually been in love with Clary for ten years. He's about to confess his love to her, but then she disappears. Later he meets her again and she explains the world of the supernatural to him and draws him into this world, which has brought him into life-threatening situations ever since.
Jace Wayland / Lightwood (Jonathan Christopher) Morgenstern : He is the seventeen-year-old protagonist who has spent his entire life as a shadow hunter. He was brought up strictly by his father, whose death he saw with his own eyes when he was ten years old. He killed more demons than anyone his age. He seems arrogant, but in reality he is caring and sensitive. But the only person he shows this side of himself to is Clary. He shows her who he really is and that he loves her. He would do anything for her, even die for her. He likes to fight, mostly with angelic swords.
Alexander, Alec 'Gideon Lightwood : He is Jace's oldest friend and like a brother to him. But Alec feels very differently about Jace than he feels about him, because he loves him, although he would never tell him because homosexuality is not welcomed in the shadowhunter world. Later he still has a relationship with the warlock Magnus Bane, which he constantly denies. He is Jace 'Parabatai (brother in arms) but has never killed a demon.
Isabelle, Izzy 'Sophie Lightwood : She is Alec's real and Jace' felt sister. She loves her brothers and often worries about them. She has a soft spot for fashion and her weapons are mostly disguised as jewelry. Your weapon is an electric whip. According to Jace, she often lets her lover down after a while, which is why Clary worries when she is suddenly 'together' with Simon.
Maxwell, Max 'Lightwood : Isabelle and Alec's little brother. He admires Jace and enjoys reading manga.
Maryse and Robert Lightwood : They are the parents of Isabelle, Alec and Max. They were once in a circle, just like Clary's mother.
Hodge Starkweather : He's Alec, Jace, and Izzy's mentor. He cannot leave the institute because he previously belonged to the circle and that is now his punishment. He betrays the Shadowhunters by delivering the Chalice of Insignia and Jace Valentine to be freed from his curse. When Clary follows him, he wants to kill her, but is stopped by Luke. He is critically injured, but he still disappears.
Magnus Bane : He's the chief warlock of Brooklyn. When Clary was a young child, her mother hired Magnus to block Clary's second face, which allowed her to see the shadowy world. Since this would have posed a great danger to the girl, Magnus put a spell on her instead, which made her forget everything supernatural as soon as she had seen it. Unfortunately, he couldn't undo the spell, but showed Clary some runes in the Gray Book that he hoped would help her remember. He later has a relationship with Alec, which makes him come to the rescue of Clary and her new friends more often. He is already several hundred years old (more details are not available) and has had various relationships with both men and women.
Valentin Morgenstern : He is a shadow hunter who, however, defies the law and also kills half-demons. He founded the circle to find comrades-in-arms. He can easily convince people with his words and his false amiable ways and make them love him. He was previously married to Jocelyn and is Clary's father. He pretended to have killed and burned himself and Clary's older brother, Jonathan Christopher, in his home to escape advice. He is the council's archenemy and later allies with demons to kill the Shadowworlders.
Raphael : He's the leader of the vampires in New York. He is Mexican and lures Jace and Clary into a trap as they try to rescue Simon from the clutches of the vampires.

Film adaptations

The film adaptation of the book by director Harald Zwart came to German cinemas on August 29, 2013 .

The television series Shadowhunters , based on the book series, has been broadcast since 2016 .
