occupation

Nightlife is a German comedy film directed by Simon Verhoeven in summer 2019 with Elyas M'Barek , Palina Rojinski and Frederick Lau in the leading roles. The world premiere was on February 4, 2020 in Berlin's Zoo Palast, federal start on February 13, 2020 by Warner Bros. Pictures .

action

At the center of the action are the two friends Milo and Renzo and the mostly nocturnal Berlin. The young Milo works as a bartender who turns night into day and often wakes up the next morning at the side of a woman who is stranger to him. Milo knows that things can't go on like this and after seeing normal people doing their day's work when looking out the window in daylight, he begins to long for a “more normal”, “serious” life with a wife and children. This would be possible if Milo's best friend Renzo wasn't a slob who regularly gets into trouble through his actions. Even the bank, which is supposed to realize Milo's serious life plans, takes a stand, even if the somewhat eccentric banker Heiko stands up for Milo. In view of his friend in need, Renzo now takes the initiative and almost conjures up a catastrophe.

Renzo takes matters into his own hands in his very personal way and - once again - gets involved in a crooked affair that promptly loses three kilos of cocaine . Suddenly he has half of the Berlin underworld on his neck. One evening, Milo met the red-haired music manager Sunny at an inopportune time and suddenly fell in love with the young woman. She might be the right one for him for life, but unfortunately Sunny plans to emigrate to the United States in the near future to start a new and interesting job with a record company in Atlanta . In order to sound out his chances with her, Milo plans a date on the same evening they meet. But this planned romantic dinner takes a completely unexpected turn, because the rushed buddy Renzo bursts into it and explains Milo that dangerous gangsters are on his heels. Now events come thick and fast and a turbulent hunt through night Berlin begins.

Reviews

On Blick.de you can read that the film is “an amusing piece of popcorn cinema that doesn't take itself too seriously and is exceptionally well cast, right down to the supporting roles”. In addition, the supporting characters and guest appearances were particularly praised, "which are unrestrainedly oversubscribed, but are still a lot of fun".

The Berliner Morgenpost saw Verhoeven's film as a "declaration of love for the Berlin night."

Film Spiegel Essen found that director Verhoeven was mixing "modern romantic comedy with a fast-paced crime thriller into good-humored fun for a very large audience."

BILD described the film as "a love-buddy comedy with a laugh-guarantee."

TV Movie described the film as "an enjoyable mixture of modern romantic comedy and fast-paced crime thriller."

The Tagesspiegel wrote: “Simon Verhoeven combines the demands of mainstream cinema for familiarity - popular cast, clear plot structure - with a portion of anarchy. At Verhoeven, humor is always a question of details. Above all, however, his flair for comedy is defined by his loving view of thoroughly fallible characters. The big heart of a humorous humanist beats behind the shrill comedy fireworks. Worth seeing."

In its review of the film, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung stated: “Only character comics usually don't get you very far, it depends on the genre's inner workings being well taut. (...) Comedies tell of an overload, for which there is relief at the price of ridiculousness. "Nightlife" knows enough about this not to embarrass itself in the face of the most demanding of all genres. "

The film website Filmstarts.de rated: "A fun excursion into nightlife - without a hangover!"

The film magazine Cinema found, "Verhoeven combines slapstick scenes with puns and situational comedy". The game night was praised as one of the highlights, “which escalated in a macabre way. The fact that the story works so well is not only due to the ludicrous entanglements and the pointedly written dialogues, but above all to the precise timing of the actors ”.

The industry websitequotemeter.de wrote about “Nightlife”: “The closer Verhoeven interweaves the threads of action, which are initially parallel and later increasingly closer to one another, the better the film works. Here every action detail has its place and function ”.

KinoKino came to the conclusion: “Simon Verhoeven knows how to slow down the pace in between. The romantic part of the comedy works - but it's also a rowdy one. (...) In the gangster comedy part of "Nightlife", the film gets lost, becomes a bit confused, although the gag density is high. "

The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger rated the film as a “successful mainstream comedy with a sense of comic detail and a big heart for its fallible characters”.

Gross profit

"Nightlife" started in German cinemas on February 13, 2020. With box-office earnings of almost 3.2 million euros on its first screening weekend, the film was the top-selling title in the German cinema charts. After 3 weeks and as the first German film in 2020 with over 1 million visitors, the theatrical exploitation ended abruptly when all cinemas in Germany were closed for the time being due to the corona crisis . During the period during the social distancing recommended by the state and federal states , in which only drive-in theaters were allowed to remain open, Nightlife took first place in the so-called "Lockdown Charts" with 66,000 spectators, ahead of The Perfect Secret and The Kangaroo Chronicles.
