The Camp Marmal (CM) is the largest camp of the Bundeswehr outside the Federal Republic of Germany . It is located near the Afghan city ​​of Mazar-e-Sharif at the foot of the Hindu Kush . Construction of the camp began in September 2005 and is about two and a half by one and a half kilometers in size. In the Camp were up to 5,500 soldiers ISAF , including 2,800 soldiers of the Bundeswehr stationed along with additional units from 19 other nations. Since the withdrawal of the ISAF troops, which ended on December 31, 2014, the camp has been the base for around 1,000 German soldiers from the Resolute Support project to train the Afghan security forces.

The military part of the regional airport ( Mazar-e Sharif airport ) is located in the area of ​​the camp. The Norwegian camp Nidaros is located within the CM. It is named after the adjacent Marmal Mountains . Originally, however, the name Camp Alexander was planned.

CM housed the headquarters of the German armed forces in Afghanistan, the Regional Command North (RC N) of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the forces of the Quick Reaction Force (QRF). This was provided for the first time by the Bundeswehr in July 2008 and operated until 2010 and finally replaced by two training and protection battalions .

The ISAF mission ended on December 31, 2014. Since then, Camp Marmal has been the base of the German contingent of the "Train Advise and Assist Command (TAAC) North", which is led by a German brigadier general , as part of Operation Resolute Support .

As part of the ISAF operation, around 5500 soldiers were serving at Camp Marmal at the same time, 2,800 of them Germans. Further powers represent v. a. the United States , Norway and Croatia as well as 16 other nations, most of which belong to NATO .

CM was the starting point for the tasks of the ISAF soldiers in the context of their deployment in northern Afghanistan. Property protection , reconnaissance and intelligence gathering as well as civil-military cooperation projects - CIMIC were the main tasks in addition to leading and supplying the five Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRT). The German CH-53 and Transall were also stationed here in the Mazar-e Sharif squadron . The tornadoes stationed here since 2007 were withdrawn again in November 2010.

The five PRTs in Kunduz , Feyzabad , Meymaneh , Pol-e Khomri and Mazar -e Sharif were subordinate to the RC North. They supported and protected the nine provinces under their military administration during the reconstruction. The cooperation with standing non-governmental organizations (NGO - Non-Governmental Organizations) and Afghan security forces in the foreground.

Since Operation Resolute Support began , up to 970 German soldiers have been stationed in Afghanistan on the basis of the relevant resolution of the German Bundestag, the vast majority of them at Camp Marmal.

Medical supplies

Mission hospital (2010)

In 2007 the German hospital was completed. It has the medical facilities and treatment options of a well-equipped German district hospital . It is primarily used as an emergency treatment facility for members of the International Protection Force in Afghanistan (ISAF). It is also available to German nationals in Afghanistan and employees of aid organizations within the framework of existing contracts or in the event of acute emergency treatment . Local Afghan citizens will also be treated within the framework of free capacities and resources. In honor of the doctor who fell in April 2010, it bears his name: “Field hospital Oberstabsarzt Dr. Thomas Broer ”.

In addition to two surgical units , various specialist outpatient clinics , an intensive care unit and a nursing ward with a total of 35 beds are available. The staff, including the hospital management, pharmacy and laboratory, amounts to around 80 soldiers.
