The Trabzon Logistic Transhipment Point (abbreviation: LogUgPkt TR) was a Bundeswehr facility in the Turkish port city of Trabzon on the Black Sea , which served to return material from Afghanistan .

background

Trabzon Airport

The deployment of the Bundeswehr within the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) should be ended by the end of 2014 . The subsequent follow-up mission, Resolute Support , was considerably smaller, so that a large part of the material from the German ISAF contingent had to be returned to Germany. It was assumed that 1200 vehicles and 4800 containers were required to transport. Three routes were selected for transport:

  • Turkey route with air transport from Mazār-i Scharif to Trabzon and further transport by ship to Germany for around 85 percent of the material,
  • Overland by rail from Mazār-i Sharif to Klaipėda and onward transport by ship to Germany for around 10 percent of the material,
  • Direct flight from Mazār-i Sharif to Germany for around 5 percent of the material.

Mission and organization

The transshipment point was given the task of preparing and loading the material delivered by air on the Turkey route to Trabzon Airport , located about six kilometers east of the city, for sea transport. For this purpose it was viewed, technically checked, examined for damage, re-picked and assigned to individual logistic facilities in Germany as the addressee. According to an agreement with Turkey, up to 250 German soldiers could be deployed for this purpose.

The transshipment point was divided into a staff area and a transshipment area called the blue plate in the port area of Trabzon. The soldiers deployed there came from different associations of the armed forces base , including forces of the military logistics , the NBC defense troops , the military police force and the command support troops . An officer with the rank of colonel or sea captain was used as head.

The transshipment point was set up to initially handle the cargo of up to 15 aircraft per week. A sea transport to Germany was planned every ten to fifteen weeks.

On January 21, 2015, the last transport ship, the Britannia Seaways, left the port of Trabzon to be unloaded ( unloaded ) on February 3, 2015 in Emden, Lower Saxony . A total of 175 transport flights coming from Afghanistan were handled. 1008 vehicles and 480 containers with a total tonnage of well over 14,000 tons were distributed over seven sea transports.
