The Haswell Island is an island in the Southern Ocean about three kilometers off the Antarctic coast near the Mirny Station in East Antarctica . The largest island of the Haswell Islands with around 1 km² is located just under 300 kilometers west of the Shackleton Ice Shelf and around 80 kilometers south of Drygalski Island . The closest islands are Tokarev, Gorev and Buromsky Islands . Haswell Island is partly ice-free, has rocky subsoil and reaches a height of almost 100 meters. The island was discovered in 1912 by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911–1914.
Haswell Island is a breeding ground for various marine bird species , but their populations have declined in recent decades. The Adelie penguin is most numerous with 27,000 adults in the Antarctic summer 2009/2010. The silver petrel , the Antarctic petrel , the Cape petrel , the snow petrel , the spotted petrel and the Antarctic kua also breed here . There is a breeding colony of emperor penguins on the fast ice southeast of the island . Mammals are mainly represented by the Weddell seal , but there are four other seal species , including the rare horse seal . Minke whales and killer whales can be found in the waters around the island .
Haswell Island is designated as a specially protected area of Antarctica No. 127 ( Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 127 ) in accordance with the Environmental Protection Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty . BirdLife International lists it as AQ141 in its list of Important Bird Areas .
