The Haswell Islands are a group of rocky islands off the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land . They are just under 1.2 km from Mabus Point and extend seaward over a length of 2.2 km.

The team from the west base of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson discovered and mapped them. She named the islands as Rookery Islands after the large breeding colony of emperor penguins on Haswell Island , the largest island in the group. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia renamed it in 1955 based on the name of this island. It is named after the Australian zoologist William Aitcheson Haswell (1854-1925), who was a member of the advisory board for the Australasian Antarctic Expedition.

The largest cemetery in Antarctica has existed on Buromski Island since 1960 and is now under the protection of the Antarctic Treaty as the " Historic Site and Monument " HSM-9 .
