Manfred Nielson (born February 25, 1955 in Dorsten ) is an admiral out of service in the German Navy . His last employment was Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk (USA).

Military career

After graduating from high school in 1973, he joined the German Navy as a reserve officer candidate . From 1974 to 1975 he served as an officer on watch on the coast minesweepers Koblenz and Wetzlar in the 6th minesweeping squadron in Wilhelmshaven . From 1975 he studied economics and organizational sciences at the Helmut Schmidt University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg and received the academic degree of business administration degree in 1978 .

After completing his studies, he returned to the fleet and was employed as an officer on watch on the mine-hunting boats in Flensburg , Cuxhaven and Koblenz . From 1980 to 1981 he took part in the underwater weapons training at the Naval Weapons School in Eckernförde . He then became the commandant of the Tübingen mine-hunting boat (until 1983). This use was followed by another time in command on the hollow rod steering boat Paderborn . In 1985 he switched to the Armed Forces (FüS) staff at the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn .

Service as a staff officer

From 1986 to 1988 he completed the 28th admiralty staff officer course at the command academy of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg, after which he was promoted to corvette captain. From 1988, he was employed as an operations and training officer ( S3 ) and deputy squadron commander of the 6th mine sweeping squadron in Wilhelmshaven. In 1990 he returned to the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn and became a consultant in the personnel department. From 1994 he worked in the ministry as a personal assistant to the head of the human resources department. In 1996 a troop command followed as commander of the 6th mine sweeping squadron in Wilhelmshaven, which frigate captain Nielson held until 1997.

In the course of a renewed transfer to the Federal Ministry of Defense, he was promoted to captain at sea in 1997 and was appointed head of the “Central Affairs” department in the Ministry's planning staff. In 2000, he was subsequently employed as head of the "Personnel and Internal Management" department on the same staff. From 2000 to 2002 he was the office manager of the State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defense Klaus-Günther Biederbick .

In 2002 Nielson was given command of the Mürwik Naval School in Flensburg - Mürwik , where he was responsible for training naval officers.

Service as an admiral

In 2003 he was appointed flotilla admiral . From May to October 2003 he served as Commander Task Force 150 in the context of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in the Horn of Africa and commanded a multinational task force. From 2005 onwards he was employed again in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn as sub-department head I in the department for personnel, social and central affairs (PSZ).

In February 2008 he was appointed rear admiral and took over the post of chief of staff in the command staff of the armed forces, where he served under Inspector General Wolfgang Schneiderhan and from January 2010 Volker Wieker . On July 1, 2010, Nielson took over the post of commander of the fleet in Glücksburg with the appointment of Vice Admiral from Hans-Joachim Stricker . On June 30, 2011, Nielson gave command of the fleet command. The post of the commander of the fleet was not filled, so that he handed over the official business to the deputy commander, Rear Admiral Michael Mollenhauer .

While still in command of the fleet, Vice-Admiral Nielson was appointed head of the Bundeswehr Structural Reform Task Force in the Federal Ministry of Defense at the end of March 2011 by the Federal Minister of Defense Thomas de Maizière . In June 2011, Nielson was then commissioned to head the individual project group for the realignment of the Bundeswehr, reviewing armaments and procurement projects. Martin Schelleis was appointed as his successor in his function as head of the Bundeswehr structural reform task force on July 20, 2011 . Nielson was there with the establishment of the department planning entrusted the Ministry of Defense.

On March 28, 2012, Nielson took command of the armed forces base , which he handed over to Lieutenant General Martin Schelleis on October 6, 2015 .

On March 24, 2016 he took up the post of Deputy (Deputy) Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk (USA) . With the new assignment was connected the promotion to admiral , the highest military rank in the Navy, which has only been awarded to four officers since the establishment of the Bundeswehr in 1955.

On September 27, 2019, Nielson retired after 46 years of service.

Nielson is married with two grown children.
