The Herderschule Gießen is a high school in Gießen ( Hesse ), named after the poet, theologian and philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder .

It was founded in 1837 as a provincial secondary school and converted into a secondary school in 1884 . In 1956 it was given the current name Herderschule . The school is known for its good range of foreign languages. In the subjects of biology, geography and politics & economics, bilingual courses in English are offered from grade 7 and history from grade 9. Biology and history courses have also been offered in English since 2006. The Herderschule Gießen is one of the first German schools to offer Chinese lessons. Since September 2009 it has been possible to complete a voluntary social year at the Herderschule . Well-known former students include the actors Til Schweiger and Luk Pfaff as well as the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier .

Eight year high school

For the 2005/2006 school year, the eight-year high school (shortened course - G8 ) was introduced at the Herderschule . The Herderschule is currently trying to be the first school in Hessen to reintroduce a school class with a high school diploma after nine years, parallel to G 8. Attempts by the school management to circumvent the new regulation by voluntarily repeating a class for students who want to take their Abitur in nine years as before is not tolerated by the education authority. The material of the old curriculum should be taught in the school year won. Since the 2013/14 school year, it has been possible to choose between G8 and G9 after the 6th grade.

Redevelopment

It is being renovated for the first time since moving into the current school building. The south schoolyard has been completely renovated. From 2010, the floor was replaced and a more child and youth-friendly atmosphere was created with the help of play equipment and resting places. This renovation was completed in 2011. At the beginning of 2012, the renovation work was also completed in Block C of the Herderschule, in which the science classrooms and the upper school rooms are located. These rooms were u. a. equipped with multimedia (e.g. DSL connections and interactive whiteboards ). In summer 2012, the facade and rooms of the main building, Block A, are to be renovated. The rooms are also to be equipped with whiteboards and DSL connections. In the course of the renovation work, increased PCB levels were found in House A, which is why House A was completely closed. Only the newly renovated House C and the cafeteria can currently be used. To compensate for this, a three-story and two two-story container complexes were built. In these there are 35 classrooms, three art rooms and three music rooms, a computer room, the upper level room and the administration (including secretariat, school management, teachers' room and offices). The renovation of House A will continue as soon as the now necessary PCB renovation has been carried out. As a result of the renovation work, the east courtyard and part of the south courtyard are temporarily closed.
