The Sun Princess (II) is a cruise ship that was commissioned in 1995 by the US shipping company Princess Cruises . She is the lead ship of the four-unit Sun class and was one of the largest cruise ships in the world when it was completed.

history

The Sun Princess was built under hull number 5909 in the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone and was launched on January 21, 1995. After completion and delivery to Princess Cruises on November 8, 1995, the ship began service on December 2, 1995 for cruises from Fort Lauderdale . It is the shipping company's second ship with this name. The first Sun Princess entered service in 1972 as the Spirit of London and was in service with Princess Cruises from 1974 to 1988.

The Sun Princess was the first unit of the Sun class named after her . It was followed by the sister ships Dawn Princess (1997), Sea Princess (1998) and Ocean Princess (2000). From 1995 to 2000 the ship was registered in Monrovia and then in London until 2004 . Hamilton has been the home port ever since .

In July 2018, the Sun Princess received a two-week shipyard overhaul. In addition to modernizing the interior, this also included a new hull painting on the bow of the ship. The Sun Princess has been in service for cruises in Australia and New Zealand since 2019 . It was originally planned to be used as a hotel ship during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo before it had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic .

Also due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ship was refused to dock in a port in Madagascar on February 13, 2020 after a visit to Thailand . On March 1, the Sun Princess was allowed to dock in Réunion , where the passengers were prevented from leaving the ship and objects were thrown at them by local demonstrators. On March 26, 2020, the Department of Health for Western Australia announced that at least one passenger on the Sun Princess has contracted Covid-19.
