The Ruby Princess was built under construction number 6150 at Fincantieri in Trieste . The delivery took place on October 23, 2008 to Carnival Corporation & plc and Princess Cruises . The ship was christened on November 6, 2008 by Trista and Ryan Sutter in Fort Lauderdale , Florida .

Data

The Ruby Princess has two sister ships, the Crown Princess and the Emerald Princess . On board there is space on 19 decks for a crew of 1,200 and up to 3,080 passengers.

Cruising areas

The Ruby Princess goes to different destinations around the world. In 2017 and 2018 she was deployed along the West American Pacific coast, destinations including Mexico, California and Alaska.

COVID-19 2020 on board

The visit of the Ruby Princess of Napier in New Zealand on 15 March 2020 caused there COVID-19 -cases. As of April 3, 2020, a number of cases were confirmed to be related to the ship.

On March 19, 2020, the Ruby Princess docked with 1,100 crew members and 2,700 passengers after a cruise to New Zealand at the overseas passenger terminal in Sydney. The cruise ship was forced to return to Sydney early after some passengers reported difficulty breathing. Upon disembarkation, passengers were not informed that anyone on board showed any symptoms of COVID-19 during the voyage. On March 20, it was announced that three passengers and one crew member on the Ruby Princess had tested positive for the virus. New South Wales health authorities asked all passengers to self-isolate. On March 24, a person who was a passenger aboard the Ruby Princess on the March 8-19 cruise died after a coronavirus diagnosis. As of April 4, the total number of cases increased to 662. The total number of deaths increased to 13. There were 11 reported cases of secondary transmission from people infected on the ship that did not result in any death.

The ship was moved to Port Kembla on April 6th . On April 8, the ship's crew of around 1,000 people were on board, 200 of whom had flu-like symptoms; 18 had tested positive for COVID-19. New South Wales Police were conducting a criminal investigation to determine why the ship was allowed to dock without quarantine and allow passengers to disembark.
